Operating in Canada?

Just got back from a week in Canada... before I left I called about using my Tracfone account up there and was told "as long as you have Verizon towers?" Thing is, my sister was there with her very Verizon phone and had no issues connecting via cellular. Yes, I seemed to be able to use my WiFi calling, but only when I was indoors attached to a WiFi signal.

How does one go about using it as a mobile phone in Canada?
