Transfer service back to my old phone

I purchased a refurbished iPhone 12 to replace an older iPhone. The transfer worked perfectly and only took about 15 minutes. After a day of use I discovered an issue with the new phone and I have to return it. so I logged in to my account, selected the inactive phone and selected activate. It asked which number I wanted to transfer and I selected the proper one. After a few minutes, the newer phone shows as inactive, although I can still make calls. The old phone that I am trying to reactivate shows port in progress. This has now been more than 24 hours and the phone still shows as “port in progress”.. I left the original sim card in the old phone. What do I need to do? Any help would be appreciated!
