Buying a new phone

If I buy an unlocked phone from somewhere like ebay that is not tied to a specific carrier can I simply swap out the sim card from my old phone or is it more complicated? I have a feeling that it is but want to check anyway. Do I need to get one that is for Sprint if that is my carrier? Thanks in advance for understanding that this is my first post and I'm not familiar with your protocols.
