Tracfone needs to "release" my phone?

I just unlocked my Tracfone phone and wanted to try a different provider's sim card as an experiment, even though I do not intend to cancel my Tracfone service or move my number to a new provider. I thought it would be as easy as replacing the sim card, activating the new service with a new phone number, trying it for a few days, then replacing the Tracfone sim back in the phone, and all would be back to normal.

But I'm told that I can not activate a new service on the same phone without Tracfone "releasing" the phone, so it can be used with the new service. If I have Tracfone release the phone, and I try the new service, is it easy to just go back to my Tracfone account, which is still there and active, by having the other provider release the phone again? Would this change any of my balance of minutes or data?
