Actually I solved the problem myself. It turns out you need to uninstall the old "my account" app and re-install a newer version in the app store. I don't like the new app as much, it's not intuitive how to get how much minutes, texts, and data are remaining. You need to scroll thru the messages on the main page and find the section that says "service end date" and there's a circle with three dots to the right. Press on that, and then it will search for this info and display it.
