Travel to Canada

I live near Canada, and occasionally I cross the border into Canada for a few hours.

When there I turn my iPhone off because a friend said my Tracfone account doesn't include Canada, and if I use the iPhone there (call out or even answer an incoming call) I will generate "terrible" costs?

Is that true?
