Cannot connect to visual voice mail error message

My voice mail used to notify me when I got a message but this last week all that happens is that I get a *cannot connect to visual voice mail* message. As far as I know, I don't have visual voice mail anyway. Is there a way I can get just plain old voice mail notifications and turn off the visual voice mail junk? Or maybe a third party voicemail app that will work? I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 running Android 9 as of a few months ago. Thanks.
